Gary Taubes’s new book, Why We Get Fat, published early in 2011, was a watershed event in the field of weight loss and issues on craving sugar.
For the first time, it pulls together clinical data over the past 7 decades on why we are suffering from an epidemic in obesity – and what we, as individuals, can do about it. It is an excellent starting point for anyone interested in losing or maintaining their weight – or for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
In essence, we have been the victims of bad science. We’ve been told that dietary fat, overeating, too many carbohydrates and lack of exercise are the causes for obesity. There have been so many different causes for why we get fat that a person who wants to do something about it can be totally baffled by the number of ways to do it. In reality all these factors (fat, overeating, carbohydrates and lack of exercise) have an effect, but the real culprit behind it all is the vast variety and volume of carbohydrates and sugars in our modern diet – in our grocery stores, restaurants, and homes. This topic and the insights on it provided by experts such as Gary Taubes will be the subject of a number of posts in the future. This is important – and can save your life if you take action on it. Another post on this website covers an article Gary Taubes wrote for the New York Times and published in April, 2011, Is Sugar Toxic?.
This video is an introduction to his book , Why We Get Fat, by Gary Taubes, aired on Channel 2, Denver, CO, on 2/10/2011.
UPDATE:
As of September, 2011, Gary Taubes is continuing to gain credibility for his conclusions and his book. He has been on the Dr. Oz TV Program a number of times with the ongoing disagreement between Dr. Oz and Gary on Low Carb vs. Low Fat becoming a real draw. This has escalated with a series called: “Gary Taubes, the Man Who Disagrees with Everything Dr. Oz Says” (or something to that effect). The appearances on Dr. Oz have no doubt accelerated sales of the book.

Good blog, I’m glad that you shared this.
On the high-fat high-protein plan I lost 50 pounds in one year, without exercise beyond normal household chores. It was easy, so I continue toward my weight-loss goal, and probably will stay on this program the rest of my life. For those who lost weight on low carb, then returned to their former ways and gained the weight back, blame yourself not low-carb eating. The choice to return to unrestricted carbs if you lost on restricted carbs was a foolish one. It only works if you do it and stick to it.
You’re right – the decision is in your hand.. thanks!
