Post Induction Stall Syndrome, Glycogen, Water Retention

Has Your Low Carb Diet Stalled?  It May Be the Post Induction Stall Syndrome…

There is a common occurrence with a low carb diet called the Post Induction Stall Syndrome.  This is a stall in the weight loss progress that occurs a week or so into the weight loss campaign, after some initial weight loss has occurred.  All of a sudden, even though the dieter is staying on the plan and avoiding the carbs, the weight levels out for a while and even may increase.  This can be very discouraging unless you are aware that it is entirely normal.  If you’ve kept to your diet, this leveling off period is just temporary and relates basically to water retention.  You are still losing fat – your weight scales for a while just don’t seem to get with the program.

The following video by Kent Altena describes in more details why and how this occurs.

The Post Induction Stall Syndrome, or P.I.S.S. relates to the glycogen that is removed during the early stages of low carb dieting.  It somewhat generally is a 4 pound or so, re-adjustment of weight in the form of water.  It can happen at almost any point in your diet also if you fall off the wagon and gobble down too many carbs in a moment of weakness.  You all of a sudden go back up in weight by around 4 pounds.  It has happened to me so I can attest that it is a shock.  It is however, just a bump up in weight,  so when it happens get seriously back on your low carb diet and in the end you’ll make your weight loss goal.
