The Obesity Hypothesis Controversy
I enjoyed participating in a podcast discussion on Jimmy Moore’s Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Conversations website. Pam Howell (a health club manager who has dabbled with naturopathic medicine and is currently in Pharmacy School) was a guest on the show with me. We were interviewed by hosts Jimmy Moore and Mindy Noxon.
The topic that piqued my interest was the controversy between two opposing obesity hypotheses now being discussed on the internet. One, the Carbohydrate Hypothesis, proposed by Gary Taubes holds that obesity and weight gain are a result of a defect in fat metabolism driven by carbohydrates, whereas the other hypothesis, proposed by Stephan Guyenet, PhD, is that obesity is due to the palatability (food reward) of the food we eat, which encourages overeating. See the post I just published on this controversy.
The following video clip from the Fat Head Blog is a good introduction to the Carbohydrate Hypothesis proposed by Gary Taubes. When I find a good one for the other hypothesis I’ll include it as well.
