Low Carb Diet Controversy – BBC Story Part 2
In Part 2 of the BBC story on the low carb diet, the drama in the 1970s surrounding the validity of the Atkins diet is discussed. Introduced in the 1970s by Dr. Atkins, the low carb diet appeared to many to be idiotic – “how could you possibly lose weight by eating all the meat and cheese you want?”. Dr. Atkins was persistent however, and over the years, more and more people successfully used the diet.
Finally, scientists decided to test the diet rigorously once and for all, pitting the low carb diet against a low calorie diet. After 6 months, the low carb dieters had lost twice as much weight as the low calorie dieters. The scientists were finally convinced.
But it wasn’t over for the low carb diet… Others began to question its risk for heart disease. They suggested that eating meat and fat, as a relatively large proportion of the diet, would lead to higher cholesterol levels and the risk of heart disease. New studies were conducted and in a surprise to all but the low carb enthusiasts, low carb dieters were found to have improved heart risk indications (blood pressure, cholesterol, etc.) whereas low calorie dieters indicated no change in heart risk indications.

There have been hundreds of studies “proving” that saturated fat is unhealthy. I took a look at several of them, and found something very interesting that they had in common — a test diet rat chow with the designation “5TJP”.
You can look that test diet up on the internet. It is produced by Purina Test Diet.
It contains Crisco as it’s primary fat. It also contains added sugar. The sugar is added because otherwise, the rats won’t eat enough of that cr*p to gain weight. The Crisco is in there because the ‘researchers’ know that it is an unhealthy fat, and can be used to ‘bash’ the Atkins diet.
Can you say, “Intellectual Dishonesty”? I knew you could.

Howard,
Thanks! That’s a good one! Another way they distort this kind of thing (there are many) is to compare human study results between a low carb and low fat diet, but change the regimen of the low carb diet to allow more carbs than they should. There’s an old latin term for it – something about “buyer beware”.
PS – thanks again for letting me know the comments weren’t working!!
