For Low Carbing, Don’t Forget Fiber
Fiber is like a magic button. It’s extremely important. It doesn’t matter which diet plan you’re on, you still need to consume plenty of fiber. Unfortunately, it seems like low carb plans are the only plans that stress getting plenty of daily fiber.
Fiber is an undigestable carbohydrate that acts like a binding or bulking agent. It helps carry waste and toxins out of the body. The magic part is that it also slows digestion. Any time you eat a meal that is high in carbohydrates, make sure it contains plenty of fiber.

When you consume a meal, the digestion stage begins to break apart the materials you’ve eaten. It has to separate these items so it can use them as fuel – especially important for a low carb diet. Fiber slows down this process because the body has to pull the fiber away from the proteins, fats and carbohydrates before it can use any of them and complete digestion. This is why fiber not only makes you feel fuller, it makes you feel fuller for longer periods.
What else does fiber do?
Fiber helps reduce food cravings because it takes the digestive process longer to separate it from the other nutrients. It also binds to cholesterol, absorbs and removes bad bacteria and helps the body to excrete bile.
Fiber is a powerhouse because of the many benefits it provides to your body. Since it’s not digestible it is not converted into sugar and therefore does not raise your blood sugar levels. This is extremely important for diabetics.
If your diet menu doesn’t include plenty of fiber, don’t forget you can take supplements. Most people take these to avoid constipation, but it’s also good to take some at each meal, especially if that meal is high in processed carbohydrates.
The best sources of fiber are fruits and vegetables. The majority of fiber is found in the peels, so if it’s possible leave the peels on your foods so you get as much fiber as possible.
Low carb eating plans stress the intake of fiber, not only for weight loss but also for all the healthful benefits mentioned above. Fiber truly is a magic substance. Be sure to get plenty of fiber with each meal so you can enjoy its benefits for overall health.

Fiber is an important part of everybody’s diet. People on a strict diet can also have guilt-free cheat days with fiber-rich snacks! Is this advisable for children as well? Having fiber as the main ingredient of milkshakes and chocolate is a really good idea to be able to easily make children get the fibrous nutrients their bodies need and enjoy their snack at the same time.
Hi Leucadio,
It’s all in the balance of it all. I think we stress fiber so much because so many people just don’t get nearly enough of it. Like any good thing you can get too much of it. So my feeling is plenty of fiber plus plenty of fats and not so many carbs! Does that make sense?
