Dr. Eric Westman and the American Society of Bariatric Physicians
Don’t miss the following video. It is an understated but remarkably powerful message for the Low Carb High Fat (LCHF) diet community. The message is that physicians who specialize in management of overweight and obese patients, in general, use the LCHF diet with their patients. With these doctors, you don’t hear much of the “low fat” speak you find on TV or from government agencies. Instead, you hear that they’ve been following the positive clinical results with carbohydrate restriction approaches for 15 years, and especially within the last few years have, by and large, adopted LCHF as a fundamental approach in controlling weight and improving health. WHAT A BREATH OF FRESH AIR!!
The video interview was conducted by Andreas Eenfeldt, MD, a longstanding LCHF advocate. He was speaking with Eric C. Westman, MD, and President Elect of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians. Bariatrics is the branch of medicine that deals with the causes, prevention, and treatment of obesity. The American Society of Bariatric Physicians (ASBP) is a medical professional association for physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants who are focused on the treatment and management of overweight and obese patients and their related conditions and co-morbidities.
Dr. Westman is a Duke University Research Scientist and Clinician and co-authored the latest version of the Akins Diet book, The New Atkins. He is using the LCHF diet with the thousands of patients in his clinic. In the video, he, in a matter of fact way, simply says that Bariatric Physicians look upon the LCHF diet as a primary tool in their approach to managing weight with their overweight and obese patients. He shakes his head at the kind of message he finds in the media and by government agencies, that still, in the face of mounds of evidence to the contrary, try to push the “fat is bad” or “fear of fat” agenda, telling millions of Americans they should avoid dietary fats. Inclusion of dietary fats in a LCHF diet is an essential component of this approach, as the fats provide the energy needed to provide the dieter with energy and aid in improving the taste and palatability of the food, making the diet much easier to tolerate. According to Dr. Westman, the primary teaching physicians within the ASBP follow LCHF principles. He in fact recommends the LCHF lifestyle for anyone, regardless of their weight.
Many thanks to Andreas Eenfeldt, MD, for this excellent video.
